What advice do you have for someone considering starting a business?

Do it, but be smart about it. Use your brain. Think about what make the most sense for you. Worry about every dollar you spend before (and even after) you’re profitable. Focus on the things that matter and don’t waste time endlessly redesigning your site or tinkering with new technologies. There’ll be plenty of time for that later.

I'm on a boat!

I'm on a boat in the Netherlands right now... More pictures coming soon!!

The World Cup Final was tonight, we're in a Dutch port, it was a bit sad since Holland lost... Anyway, tomorrow is my last sailing day, hopefully it should be cool :-)

Article: Open Core Is Bad For You - Community - ComputerworldUK

Interesting article on the Open-Core business model... At XWiki we have chosen to go for a full LGPL model that we believe delivers more value to our community, be them users, developers or customers. It wasn't an easy discussion and we discussed it internally a number of times, but we always eventually came to the conclusion that keeping XWiki software under the LGPL license was the best thing to do.

To me, the key success factor isn't so much the choice of business model (be it Open-Core, dual licensing or subscription-based) that matters than the adoption of your software. If people download it, like it and keep using it, you'll figure a way to make money out of it. At least that's how we do it :-)
